New York, February 25, 2008 - Former Microsoft executive and long-time philanthropist Ric Weiland, who passed away on June 24, 2006 at the age of 53, left a $46 million fund at the Seattle-based Pride Foundation that will be disbursed to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and nine other national LGBT and HIV/AIDS organizations. Each group will receive specific amounts from the fund over the course of eight years; GLAAD’s share is approximately $7.9 million.

“Ric's generous bequest is the largest in the more than 22 year history of GLAAD and presents significant opportunities to GLAAD and to the movement,” said GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano.  “A bequest of this size and this longevity permits us to create assets to strengthen our ability to meet the demands of the fast-paced ever-changing media landscape in GLAAD’s continuing quest to fight defamation and change hearts and minds, leading to full equality.”

Giuliano continued, “It also enables GLAAD to invest in infrastructure that will keep us on the leading edge of interactive communications and dramatically expand the reach of our media advocacy in the years to come. Finally, Ric's generosity will allow us to leverage his bequest to expand participation in the GLAAD Legacy Circle, our planned giving program.”

Weiland began his relationship with GLAAD as a $35 member in 1992. In 1997, GLAAD’s Senior Director of Development and Finance Julie Anderson reached out to Weiland and learned he was very interested in how GLAAD was stewarding its resources. From that year on, GLAAD sent Weiland its annual audit – and saw him generously increase his annual support of the organization. Weiland was the third member of GLAAD’s Visionary Circle, comprised of individuals whose cumulative giving to GLAAD exceeds $1 million.

Weiland’s interest in the power of the media to effect social change also created several opportunities for GLAAD staff to solicit his expertise on a number of occasions over the years. In addition to offering his feedback and counsel during the development of GLAAD's five-year strategic plan in 2003, Weiland also met with Giuliano and his program staff in 2005 to discuss the organization's ongoing People of Color Media work, its plans to expand its online media presence and its recently launched Young Adult Media Program.
